Layla and Luna were on their way home from school. It was a Friday, so they were looking forwards to the weekend. Suddenly Luna exclaimed:

“Look, under that bush, there’s something shiny!”

“What is it?”

“Wait, I’ll go and see.” Now Layla was one of these girls, who was brave and fearless and sometimes, crazy. She dived under the bush, grabbed it and climbed back out. She was holding… a knife.

“Oooh! A knife! Do you think I could kill someone with this?”

Luna looked at her in despair.

Layla through it into the air, and caught it single-handedly.

“Layla, don’t, you’ll hurt yourself!”

“God, you sound like mum. Look, I’m a natural.”

She through it up in the air a few times, until what had to happen happened. It fell and cut her finger. Not off, just cut.

“Ow! Ow, ow, ow, ow, owwwwww!”

Luna rushed over and looked at the wound. It looked pretty deep. She took the jacket she hadn’t been wearing and started bandaging up Layla’s finger. Layla jumped suddenly.

“Look!” she cried, pointing behind Luna. She spun around and saw the knife, lying on the ground. At first she didn’t notice it, but then saw a thin trail of smoke coming off the blade of the knife. She advanced a few steps and heard a noise. A sizzling sound. It was the blood sizzling on the blade, she realised with a jolt. That’s not normal, she thought worriedly. The smoke grew thicker and thicker-

“Quick, Layla, run!” she shouted. They both turned and ran as fast as they could, not turning to look back. Luna doubled-up in a fit of coughing. Layla looked behind them, and saw it was too late, although for what, she didn’t know. Only that the smoke enveloped her quickly, and she suddenly couldn’t see anything.

“Luna!” she tried to shout, but the smoke invaded her mouth and she fell to the ground choking.
